The problem with James White and those of his ilk is that they cannot win with someone like Bart Ehrman as an opponent. By following Ehrman’s rules of textual criticism and ignoring the scriptures as the final authority, the debate is over before it starts. All the Christian “apologist” can hope to do is to appear “intelligent” with a rambling argument that accomplishes absolutely nothing.
James White evidently is a very insecure man and feels that he needs to appears intelligent to his base and opponents. However, as long as “we” are the subject of the debate rather than the integrity of the scriptures, we will do no one useful service.
While Mr. White (many other names could be used) tried to assert the integrity of the original autographs through so called “textual criticism”, he was correctly disemboweled by Dr. Ehrman by the simple fact that the farther one goes back in time, the more corrupt the manuscripts are. This is true, at least with dealing with Alexandrian manuscripts.
Since White does not believe that God has preserved His words today in any form. and especially the Textus Receptus in Greek or the 1611 Authorized Version in English (not to mentioned other reliable translations in other languages, all he can do is wallow in a sea of relativity.
The biblical way to deal with Dr. Ehrman is to present a Bible, in our case the Authorized Version (aka KJV) and present it as a final authority, accepted by faith and demonstrated internally to be scripture and to leave it to Dr. Ehrman to prove the errors. Ehrman of course would not engage in such a debate as he would assert that such a position would be based on faith in god’s providence, which is exactly true.
Paul states in 2 Corinthians 2:17 that “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God:…” and that is EXACTLY what the early manuscripts show us! So, to use them to “prove” the originals were without error is laughable at best and tragic otherwise.
We do not profess in some phantom autographs to defend and to prove its integrity by corrupt extant Alexandrian copies. There is a huge logical hole here and White walks right into it and Dr. Ehrman knew exactly how to take advantage of it.
Never engage in a debate about the Bible while letting one who rejects it set the rules or your fate will be the same as White.
