“Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.”

There are many who make much of insisting that everything in Matthew 24 is past and we are now living in the post tribulation kingdom. This is based on Matthew 24:34 titled above. The text clearly states "THIS GENERATION"

Such certainly sounds reasonable at first glance. What else could it possibly mean? However, as Christians, it behooves us to study the scriptures. As a nugget of wisdom states, "A text without a context is a pretext". So as not to waste your valuable time, let's jump into the matter.

The generation is defined for us in Matthew 23.

Jesus refers to the scribes and Pharisees as a generation of vipers in 23:33 and expands it to Jerusalem in verse 37.

In verse 35 the “generation” is over 400 years long. Read the passage. Jesus accuses the generation he is talking about “YE” of killing Zacharias. The generation may even be about 4,000 years old at that time if they are also being accused of killing Abel. Also, in verse 36, the Lord states that the generation he was referring to would experience wrath.

Verse 23:39 states that that generation, now identified as Jerusalem would not see the Jesus until they would say “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”.

Now we come to Genesis 24:34. The generation that will not pass is the one that was already at least 400 years old (at least). It would not pass till everything mentioned up to that verse was fulfilled.

Lastly we come to Ephesians 3:1-6 where we see the mystery of the church was revealed to Paul by direct revelation and was unknown previously including what the gospel of Matthew records. So, what we are left with is an evil generation that Jesus refers to already over 400 years old having actually about 7 years left (and not 40 years) as the church was not even within consideration at this time.

The generation spoken about was not 40 years, 70 years, or 100 years. The generation also was not that “generation” that began to see the signs spoken about in Matthew 24 although that may be correct in our understanding of the word. The generation spoke about is the one which killed Zacharias, which rejected Jesus and will not see him again until they bless him.

Now, that is quite a generation.
